Hey legacy builders. I know we missed each other last week, but, it’s with good reason.
One of the things I pride myself on is writing with purpose and being able to share my testimony as I’m building my own legacy.
Eight years ago (2010), I had just read the book Produced by Faith by DeVon Franklin. If you don’t know who he is, stop and google him right now. In short: He is one of the biggest Hollywood producers of our time and by age 30, had accomplished significant success at the box office. He now runs his own entertainment company, Franklin Entertainment, and has been behind some of the biggest box office hits over the last 10 years.
After reading the book, a friend of mine at the time said, “You’re going to have favor with him.” Needless to say, at that time, I was too immature to understand what that meant. I was just a huge fan of his book because he was the first person that I had heard of that was living out their Christian faith in Hollywood, without compromising their values.
I wanted to mimic that. I never wanted the dream more than I wanted God, but I didn’t know how to go about pursuing what He’d placed in my heart while serving Him wholeheartedly. So reading this book showed me it could be done. So, even though what she said didn’t make a lot of sense to me then, I didn’t discount it.
Never discount a word that God sends through someone else just because you don’t understand the full weight of its revelation at the time.
Hold onto that word and wait for God to give it meaning. It was in 2013 when I would connect with him for the first time. I sent him a few emails in hopes of doing an interview with him for my blog. He was very responsive and though it never happened, I never gave up on wanting to interview him.
This past fall, when his third book, The Hollywood Commandments, came out, I ended up being chosen as one of the people on the launch team. That’s when it hit me, that the word that had been spoken over my life was starting to manifest. So imagine my surprise when I moved to LA July 1st of this year and ended up interviewing with his company for a major position on July 27th.
It was like my prayer was about to be answered and that prophesy was about to be fulfilled; but three weeks later, I got the email that I didn’t get the job. It was in that moment that I had to decide if I was going to have a meltdown or trust that God’s word was still true, it just may not happen right now (or through this way).
When you are building your legacy, there will be divine alignments along the way. It’s not up to you to fit them where you want, it’s up to God to connect the dots. You just have to trust His timing.
In conclusion, this past weekend, I volunteered to do security for a major Christian & Entertainment conference here in LA. Well, guess who ended up doing security for DeVon Franklin? You guessed it. Me! But imagine if I’d been so disappointed about not getting the job that I didn’t want anything to do with him? Do you think if I had been bitter and disgruntled that God would’ve allowed me to have this moment? Of course not.
Every ‘no’ is a test - a test of your faith and a test on whether or not you think God knows best.
Not only did I secure his table and help his entire staff with the pre-sales of his new book (yep, that included the girl that got the job I wanted), but he remembered who I was, just from me being persistent over the years. He also did a 30-second video saying ‘hi’ to my mom and gave her words of encouragement.
Your job is to keep your heart right and stay ready. It’s God’s job to position you and create the divine moments you need to bring you closer to destiny (which essentially, helps you build your legacy).
It’s taken eight years for me to meet him and to plant the seed that I would love to work with him one day. Keep pursuing what God has placed in your heart, regardless of the industry you’re in and trust that all the dots will connect one day. And that day may be tomorrow!
